Final FDA reauthorization bill threatens drug importation

The reworked FDA reauthorization bill (S. 3187/H.R. 5651) may be voted on as early as today and continues to pose a threat to your right to import prescription drugs. We are calling on you to act now to counter this threat!

We’ve alerted you before about our concerns with the House version of this bill and the fact that it contained a provision that would allow imported prescription drugs valued under $2000 to be destroyed.

As we feared, this harmful language has made it into the final legislation (the dollar amount merely changed to $2500) and some additional language was included to provide for rule making authority.

Over the last week, we’ve been waiting to find out who the conferees are so that we could alert them to our concerns. As the week passed, we grew concerned that a select group of legislators, lobbyists, and members of the Administration were meeting behind closed doors to merge the two versions of the bill.

We found out late yesterday that this yet unnamed group has indeed been meeting secretly to work out the details of a new version of the FDA reauthorization bill. Frankly, the only thing we're sure of about these discussions is that they excluded the public.
It appears that secrecy trumps transparency when it comes to our government and the public voice is ignored. All of this became known to us yesterday when a new version of the FDA reauthorization legislation suddenly appeared with the announcement that the House is expected to take it up for a floor vote as early as today.

The time to speak out is now, I urge you to send letters today to both your senators and your representative. Ask them to remove this threatening language and explain the need for secrecy. Remind them that the only secrecy in politics should be in the voting booth.
