FDA Warning and Tips for Choosing a Safe Online Pharmacy

posted Mon, 7 Feb 2011

The FDA issued a warning last month about an extortion scheme largely targeting people who have used the Internet to purchase their prescription drugs. Victims received phone calls from FDA agent impersonators using scare tactics in order to coerce them into paying phony fines.

In light of this scam, we at RxRights wanted to remind our readers that the FDA does not prosecute individuals for personal drug importation.

We’d also like to reiterate some best practices for choosing safe and legitimate online pharmacies from which to order your prescription drugs.

Legitimate online pharmacies:

  1. are licensed;
  2. guarantee patient privacy and confidentiality;
  3. require a prescription from the patient’s doctor;
  4. have a physical address and phone number, and will answer questions over the phone.
